The first time Frank Sanders saw Devils Tower was in the sudden brilliance of a lightning strike. It sent a wave of anxiety through him, but the next day he climbed The Tower. It was 1972 and the beginning of his long climbing odyssey through North America. Over the past 43 years, The Tower has remained a constant through addiction and sobriety. The 63-year-old has climbed the formation more than 2,000 times and operates a guide service and lodge at its base. Part wise man, all wild man, Frank reflects on happiness, going up and not growing old.
